> Kurt Kuenne is a skilful, committed filmmaker whose editing can press too hard. In *Dear Zachary*, his attention to the people speaking makes the documentary worth its considerable distress, even when we wish he would let their voices carry more of it.

In *Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father* (2008), home footage, photographs and spoken memories arrive in quick succession. Kurt Kuenne is assembling a portrait of Andrew Bagby, and he wants each contribution to count. We are asked to get to know someone through the people who remember him, with the archive giving their recollections faces and movement. It is an absorbing way to build a documentary, and Kuenne’s closeness to the material gives the busy cutting a purpose.

His first feature, *Scrapbook* (1999), preceded the black-and-white short comedies that include *Validation* (2007). *Dear Zachary* took six years to complete, a sustained personal undertaking alongside that shorter work. He followed it with *Shuffle* (2011), starring recurring collaborator T.J. Thyne, and later directed episodes of *The Blacklist* between 2016 and 2021. We would not reduce that body of work to one painful documentary, but our recommendation begins with the people he records here.

Kuenne gives them the attention they deserve, and their presence makes the documentary worth the emotional pressure he applies elsewhere. Start with *Dear Zachary*, but choose an evening when there is time to sit quietly afterwards.

## Biography

Kurt Kuenne is an American filmmaker and composer. Born on 24 October 1973 in Mountain View, California, he graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he received the Harold Lloyd Scholarship in Film Editing, and studied film scoring under Buddy Baker and David Raksin.

His early feature films include the teen drama *Scrapbook* (1999) and the documentary *Drive-In Movie Memories* (2001). He directed the short films *Rent-A-Person* (2004), *Validation* (2007), *Slow* (2007) and *The Phone Book* (2008). In 2002 he won an Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for the screenplay *Mason Mule*.

Kuenne is best known for the documentary *Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father* (2008), on which he served as director, writer, composer, cinematographer, editor and producer. He has also directed episodes of the television series *The Blacklist* (2013–) and the feature *Shuffle* (2012).
