## Biography

Lucy Christiana, Lady Duff-Gordon (née Sutherland), professionally known as Lucile, was a British fashion designer and costume designer. Born in London on 13 June 1863, she began working as a dressmaker in the 1890s after the end of her first marriage and established the Maison Lucile salon in London. She later opened branches in Paris, New York and Chicago, and became known for her work in couture and theatrical costume design.

Duff-Gordon designed costumes for numerous stage productions, including several editions of the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway. Her film credits include gowns for *Way Down East* (1920), directed by D. W. Griffith. She also contributed to other silent films in the 1910s and early 1920s.

She survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912 alongside her second husband, Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon. Her sister was the writer Elinor Glyn. Lady Duff-Gordon died in London on 20 April 1935.
