## Fi1m on Lance Reddick

> Lance Reddick could make a man standing still seem to be doing a difficult job. His controlled movements and resonant voice gave authority figures weight, but we rate him most when the man in charge had something to worry about.

Reddick holds himself upright, moves deliberately and lets his resonant voice do its work without raising it. A small movement, such as pushing up his glasses, can soften that severity. We value his restraint most when a script gives him something difficult to keep under control. Too often, it simply gives him more instructions to deliver.

The breakthrough was Cedric Daniels in *The Wire* (2002), created by David Simon. Alongside Dominic West’s forceful Jimmy McNulty and Sonja Sohn’s Kima Greggs, Reddick makes the competing demands of the job clear without explaining each one. Daniels has principles and ambition, and Reddick allows both to affect how we read a decision. We felt for Daniels even when we disagreed with him: Reddick made his compromises look difficult to live with.

The work that followed often asked him to remain in charge. *Fringe* (2008) cast him as Phillip Broyles, leading a team investigating paranormal events, while *Bosch* (2014) made him police chief Irvin Irving. The repeated casting was understandable, but it narrowed the uses to which such a precise actor was put.

Charon, the Continental concierge introduced in *John Wick* (2014), gave that formality a different setting. In *John Wick: Chapter 4* (2023), Ian McShane’s Winston delivers the rules with relish; Reddick delivers them with grace. His courtesy makes the rules worth hearing, but it cannot stop Michael Finch and Shay Hatten’s script repeating them. The film is worth an evening for its action, provided there is some patience left for the conversations.

*Ballerina* (2025) gives him a scene at the Continental desk, and we were glad to see him there. That welcome does not amount to a recommendation for a film whose first hour takes too long to get moving. Reddick’s familiar composure is useful, but this is a small part in a film with larger problems. Start with *The Wire*, where he has the time and the writing to make authority feel difficult.
