## Biography

Larry Haines was an American actor. Born Larry Hecht on 3 August 1918 in Mount Vernon, New York, he began his career in radio during the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in more than 15,000 programmes including series such as Inner Sanctum Mysteries and starring as Mike Hammer in That Hammer Guy (1953–54).

His best-known role was as Stu Bergman on the daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow, which he played from 1951 until the series ended in 1986. He won Daytime Emmy Awards for the part in 1976 and 1981. Haines also appeared in films including The Odd Couple (1968) as Speed and The Seven-Ups (1973) as Max Kalish, and made guest appearances on series such as Kojak, where he played Michaels.

He had a substantial Broadway career, receiving Tony Award nominations for Promises, Promises and Generation, and appeared in productions including A Thousand Clowns and Tribute. Haines died on 17 July 2008 in Delray Beach, Florida.
