## Biography

László Benedek (also credited as Laslo Benedek) was a Hungarian-born film director and cinematographer. Born in Budapest on 5 March 1905, he worked as a writer and editor in Hungarian cinema before emigrating to the United States, where he began directing feature films in Hollywood in the mid-1940s.

He directed the screen adaptation of *Death of a Salesman* (1951), for which he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Director. Benedek is best known for *The Wild One* (1953), a motorcycle gang film that provoked controversy and was banned in the United Kingdom until 1968. He also directed episodes of television series including *Perry Mason*, *The Outer Limits*, *The Fugitive* (1963), *Mannix* and *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea*.

Benedek directed films in Germany and France and continued working in both cinema and television until the 1970s. He died in the Bronx, New York, on 11 March 1992.
