Born on 28 July 1934 in Guangdong, he trained in Hung Gar kung fu from childhood under his father Lau Cham, part of a lineage tracing to Wong Fei-hung. He entered the film industry in the 1950s as a stuntman and became a leading action choreographer at Shaw Brothers Studio before directing from the mid-1970s. He is best known for directing martial arts films at Shaw Brothers in the 1970s and 1980s, including *The 36th Chamber of Shaolin* (1978), *Heroes of the East* (1978), *Dirty Ho* (1979), *Return to the 36th Chamber* (1980), *The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter* (1984) and *Martial Arts of Shaolin* (1986).
