## Biography

Lawrence E.G. Oates (1880–1912) was a British army officer and Antarctic explorer. He served with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, seeing action in the Second Boer War, and joined Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) as an expert in charge of the ponies.

Archive footage of Oates from the expedition appears in the documentary *The Great White Silence* (1924), where he is credited as Self (as Captain Oates). He died on the return journey from the South Pole after walking from his tent into a blizzard in a reported act of self-sacrifice.
