## Fi1m on Léa Seydoux

> Léa Seydoux can suggest a private worry without stopping a scene to explain it. We rate her most highly when the writing gives her something specific to endure, as *One Fine Morning* does.

In the opening of *The Beast* (2024), Léa Seydoux stands against a green screen and takes instructions on when to scream. Cinematographer Josée Deshaies keeps her in a flat green space with no floor or horizon. We were frightened by her response to a threat that nobody could see. Her fear is convincing before the film has given it a visible cause.

Her breakthrough came in Christophe Honoré’s *La Belle Personne* (2008), with wider recognition following *Blue Is the Warmest Colour* (2013). The English-language work, including *Spectre* (2015) and *Dune: Part Two* (2024), has continued alongside French films rather than replacing them. For us, the substantial roles in the intimate dramas give the clearest account of what she does. They allow time for us to notice what she keeps back.

In *Blue Is the Warmest Colour*, her Emma has a confidence that Adèle Exarchopoulos’s Adèle has not yet acquired. Seydoux makes the attraction convincing without pretending that the two women experience it alike. Just as importantly, Emma seems to have interests and feelings that continue beyond Adèle’s view of her; we never mistake her for someone who exists only to be desired. The extended sex scenes strain our patience, but the unequal confidence between the actresses keeps the relationship worth watching.

Mia Hansen-Løve puts that restraint to better use still in *One Fine Morning* (2022). As Sandra, a translator, Seydoux works through the body rather than asking every flicker of feeling to register on her face. She sits in a booth putting other people’s words into French while keeping her own troubles unspoken. We never catch her advertising the small adjustments that make Sandra’s efforts to hold herself together so convincing. The affair is the weaker half of the film, but her embarrassment at her own appetite gives it something specific and human.

Bertrand Bonello asks for more conspicuous changes in *The Beast*, where Gabrielle’s fear persists across three eras. Seydoux adjusts that apprehension to each setting without making Gabrielle seem like three unrelated characters. The Los Angeles stretch still goes on too long, and even her attentive performance cannot make it move faster. Start with *One Fine Morning*, and watch how little she needs to show us that Sandra is struggling.

## Biography

Léa Seydoux is a French actress. She was born on 1 July 1985 in Paris and began her career in French cinema with roles in *The Last Mistress* (2007) and *On War* (2008). She received César Award nominations for *The Beautiful Person* (2008) and *Belle Épine* (2010).

Seydoux gained wider recognition for her performance in *Blue Is the Warmest Colour* (2013), which shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes. She has appeared in English-language films including *Inglourious Basterds* (2009), *Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol* (2011), *The Grand Budapest Hotel* (2014), *Spectre* (2015) and *No Time to Die* (2021). Recent credits include *One Fine Morning* (2022), *The Beast* (2024) and *Dune: Part Two* (2024), in which she played Lady Margot Fenring.

She has received two Lumière Awards, five César nominations, the Chopard Trophy in 2009, and was appointed a Dame of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2016 and of the National Order of Merit in 2022. She comes from a family with ties to the French film industry.
