## Fi1m on Lee Eisenberg

> Lee Eisenberg has a useful instinct for comedy about difficult people with recognisable needs. We like the feeling beneath the jokes in *The Office*, with reservations about the overplaying, and would put his writing partnerships first in assessing his work.

In *The Office* (2005), Steve Carell makes an exhausting boss worth spending time with by letting his neediness show. That is a useful starting point for Lee Eisenberg, who helped write the series and occasionally directed it. His interest in small, recognisable human problems suits a comedy that needs us to tolerate difficult company. The jokes have to leave enough room for the cast to make those people worth knowing.

We warmed to Carell's boss because his neediness made the difficult behaviour easier to understand. The cast is the reason we recommend the series, though the borrowed beginnings and occasional overplaying count against it. When the acting pushes too hard, the comedy becomes tiring. Eisenberg's preference for character-led humour is persuasive here, but the programme also shows how easily such humour can be overdone.

Gene Stupnitsky, his long-term writing and producing partner, is central to the work that followed. They co-wrote *Year One* (2009) with Harold Ramis and the screenplay for *Bad Teacher* (2011), extending their partnership into features. Eisenberg's television work continued with *Hello Ladies* (2013), co-created with Stephen Merchant. These partnerships matter when assessing the humour: there is more than one writer deciding how far a joke should go and what a character can bear.

*Lessons in Chemistry* (2023) makes the later turn towards dramatic material clearer, with Eisenberg serving as creator, writer and showrunner on the adaptation. Its attention to preserving character and tone fits the same interest in making people recognisable. *Jury Duty* (2023), which he co-created and wrote, brings that interest to a series combining scripted comedy with reality television.

His limited directing work gives us little basis for declaring a personal visual style. That distinction matters when a page of credits can make every collaboration look like a personal statement. Start with *The Office* for its funny, fallible people, and make allowances for the moments when the actors try too hard.
