## Fi1m on Lee Jeong-beom

> Lee Jeong-beom makes revenge films about lonely men who find someone to protect, and shoots the violence so that you can follow it. *The Man from Nowhere* (2010) did both; the films since have kept the fights and, by most accounts, lost the people.

A man who has not spoken to anyone in months is adopted by the child upstairs. That is the whole of *The Man from Nowhere* (2010), and Lee Jeong-beom knows it, which is why he does not dress it up. Cha Tae-sik keeps a pawnshop; So-mi decides he is her friend; her mother steals from the wrong people, both are taken, and he goes to get her back. Lee's habit is to put a damaged man next to someone younger and let the bond do the work that a plot this familiar cannot.

He trained at the Korea National University of Arts, made shorts in the early 2000s, and began with *Cruel Winter Blues* (2006), a slow rural noir with Sol Kyung-gu that cared more about the people than about the revenge that brought them together. *The Man from Nowhere* was the breakthrough four years later, and it set the pattern: a lonely man, a child, a gang, and action staged so you can see who hits whom. The two films after it, *No Tears for the Dead* (2014) and *Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage* (2019), stayed in the same territory, bigger and busier, and were received more coolly. We have not reviewed either, but the complaint against them is consistent: overplotted scripts, a tone that lurches, and characters who stop existing between set pieces.

What works is the care. He shoots action so that you can see it, which most of the films his remind you of could not manage, and he gets quiet, layered performances from his leads. Won Bin in *The Man from Nowhere* is still and watchful, and the film is better for every minute he does not speak. Lee has said that "The action is not my main focus", and on his best day that is true; the last fight of that film had us sitting forward, not because of its speed but because every blow was in frame and every blow had a reason. There is also a scene in it, concerning what the gang does with the children it uses as couriers, that we found hard to sit through, and we are still not sure he needed it.

What does not work is restraint when restraint is called for. His villains cackle: Kim Hee-won and Kim Seung-oh are pitched for a cruder film, and the script never lets them be quiet long enough to frighten. In the final ten minutes Shim's piano comes back to ask for tears the film had already earned. *Jo Pil-ho* folded a real national tragedy into a corrupt-cop thriller and, by reputation, could not make it sit. He has not kept a crew around him either: Lee Tae-yoon and Lee Mo-gae have each shot one film for him, and Kim Sang-beom has cut one.

He has said he wants to make films for men, about friendship and the loyalty of men committing crimes together. What he is best at is one man, one child and a reason to fight, and we would like him to notice.
