## Biography

Leon Askin (born Leo Aschkenasy) was an Austrian-born actor. He was born in Vienna on 18 September 1907 and died there on 3 June 2005.

He studied at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and began his career on stage in the early 1930s. After fleeing Austria in 1938 due to the Nazi regime, he emigrated to the United States, served in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War, and established a career in film and television, often in supporting roles. He appeared as Abidor in the biblical epic *The Robe* (1953) and as Peripetchikoff in Billy Wilder's *One, Two, Three* (1961).

Askin is best known for playing General Albert Burkhalter in the sitcom *Hogan's Heroes* (1965–1971), appearing in 67 episodes. He continued working in film and television into the 1980s and returned to Vienna in 1994.
