## Biography

Leon Shamroy (also credited as Leonard Shamroy) was an American cinematographer. He began working in film laboratories in the early 1920s and became a director of photography in the late 1920s. He maintained a long association with 20th Century Fox from the 1930s onward and served as president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1947 to 1948.

Shamroy is known for his colour cinematography on *The Black Swan* (1942), *Wilson* (1944), *Leave Her to Heaven* (1945) and *Cleopatra* (1963), for each of which he won an Academy Award. He received a total of 18 Oscar nominations for cinematography, a record shared with Charles Lang. Other notable credits include *The Robe* (1953), *The King and I* (1956), *The Agony and the Ecstasy* (1965) and *Planet of the Apes* (1968). He died in Los Angeles in 1974.
