## Biography

Leonardo Bercovici (4 January 1908 – 22 November 1995) was an American screenwriter, film director and producer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he began writing for films in the late 1930s.

His screenwriting credits include *The Bishop's Wife* (1947), *Portrait of Jennie* (1948) and *Kiss the Blood Off My Hands* (1948). He also wrote and directed *Square of Violence* (1961) and *Story of a Woman* (1970). Called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he was blacklisted and worked in Europe for several years before regaining his US passport in 1956.

Later in his career Bercovici taught screenwriting at UCLA and the American Film Institute.
