## Fi1m on Leonardo DiCaprio

> Leonardo DiCaprio is unusually good at playing men who cannot bear to look foolish. We like him most when they do, and he lets their confusion or hurt show without asking us to admire the effort.

In *One Battle After Another* (2025), Leonardo DiCaprio's Bob cannot remember the answer to a coded security challenge. This is a man who used to handle explosives, now defeated by a conversation. We laughed at his bafflement, then felt for the frightened father underneath it. Paul Thomas Anderson gets a looseness from DiCaprio that we had not seen before. His failures are funny because the panic remains believable.

The vulnerability was there in Baz Luhrmann's *Romeo + Juliet* (1996), before *Titanic* (1997) made him a global star. Opposite Claire Danes, he makes Romeo's urgency convincing even when the verse gets away from him. Donald McAlpine's attention to their faces in the fish tank scene gives the attraction time to register. Danes makes the language sound more spontaneous; DiCaprio sometimes hurries past its meaning. *Gangs of New York* (2002) began the long partnership with Martin Scorsese and the move towards adult dramatic roles, with physical and psychological strain becoming familiar territory.

Quentin Tarantino found useful comedy in that intensity. In *Django Unchained* (2012), Calvin Candie's bad teeth and pretensions to French help DiCaprio make a plantation owner repellent without sacrificing his absurdity. He is loose here, too, though Samuel L. Jackson's watchful Stephen is the more unsettling performance. In *Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood* (2019), Rick Dalton's fury at his own fluffed lines is painful because DiCaprio allows the embarrassment to last. Tarantino gives him room to look ridiculous, and he makes the most of it.

Scorsese asks something less ingratiating of him in *Killers of the Flower Moon* (2023). As Ernest Burkhart, he pushes out his jaw and turns down his mouth, giving us a man accustomed to being treated as stupid. Beside Robert De Niro's softly reasonable William Hale, the physical bluntness works. DiCaprio lets that stupidity remain uncomfortable rather than trying to charm us past it. The film still depends on Lily Gladstone, and is weaker when she is absent.

Anderson's success should encourage more directors to offer him comedy. He makes Bob's inability to work a telephone worth watching without turning him into someone we can dismiss. Start there if DiCaprio's reputation for intensity has been putting you off.
