## Fi1m on Leonardo Sbaraglia

> Leonardo Sbaraglia makes anger feel physical and uncomfortably familiar. We value the force he brings to *Wild Tales*, where the comedy needs a man whose fury remains recognisable even as his behaviour becomes absurd.

In the road-rage confrontation of *Wild Tales* (2014), Leonardo Sbaraglia gives Diego an anger we can recognise without having much wish to excuse it. We laughed because the fury stayed familiar even when the behaviour became absurd. His physical commitment helps the comedy work; he does not need to make the man likeable. We rate him for that willingness to take an unpleasant character seriously. It gives the confrontation something to work with beyond the pleasure of watching people misbehave.

His early popularity in *Clave de sol* (1987–1990) preceded the sustained film partnership with Marcelo Piñeyro that began in 1993. In Piñeyro's crime drama *Plata quemada* (2000), he took a lead role that drew on the physically grounded acting that remains one of his strengths. *Intacto* (2001) provided the Spanish breakthrough. These are useful markers of the move from a television following towards the intense, morally complicated men who recur in his film work.

That emphasis should not make every part sound alike: his work takes in drama, thrillers and occasional lighter roles. Pedro Almodóvar's *Pain and Glory* (2019) gives him a supporting part as Federico Delgado. Across Argentine and Spanish cinema, he has worked both at the centre of a film and within an ensemble. The appeal for us is the bodily conviction, particularly when a confrontation needs to feel uncomfortable rather than merely loud.

Szifron gives that force a particularly suitable setting in *Wild Tales*: six revenge stories whose performers keep the anger human. A few stories run beyond their useful length, and commitment from the cast cannot entirely compensate for the slackening pace. That reservation need not become a complaint about Sbaraglia's intensity, which is part of the pleasure here. The comedy would be thinner if the actors seemed above the behaviour. Start with *Wild Tales*; there is no need to like Diego.
