## Biography

Lesser Samuels (1894–1980) was an American screenwriter and occasional producer. He graduated with a degree in metallurgy from Carnegie Tech and worked in the steel industry before entering the film business. His first scripts were written in London for British films; he was signed by MGM in 1939.

Samuels received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay for *No Way Out* (1950) and *Ace in the Hole* (1951). Other credits include *Strange Cargo* (1940), *The Silver Chalice* (1954, on which he also served as associate producer) and *Great Day in the Morning* (1956). From 1958 he was based in New York and wrote for the theatre, co-authoring the book for the 1960 musical *Greenwillow*.
