## Biography

Lewis Meltzer was an American screenwriter. Born in New York City on 28 January 1911, he studied English literature at New York University and playwriting in New York before moving to Hollywood in 1938. His first screen credit was the screenplay for *Golden Boy* (1939), co-written with Daniel Taradash.

Meltzer worked across studios and independent productions on films including *Along the Great Divide* (1951), *The Jazz Singer* (1953 remake), *The Man with the Golden Arm* (1955), *Autumn Leaves* (1956) and *The Brothers Rico* (1957). He wrote the initial script for *The Man with the Golden Arm* and received credit following Writers Guild arbitration. He also contributed to television series such as *The Rifleman* and *Naked City*. Meltzer died in Albuquerque on 23 February 1995.
