We like him best when the directors leave him room to puncture the praise surrounding him. Hands clasped behind his back and head tilted, Liam Gallagher is recognisable before he has sung a note. His nasal snarl favours attitude over polish, but the melodic phrasing matters too: there is more to the performance than looking ready for an argument. On screen, he repeatedly appears as himself in documentaries and concert films about Oasis and his solo work.
