Liam O'Brien was an American screenwriter and television producer. Born in New York City on 7 March 1913, he was educated at Fordham University and Manhattan College. He began his career writing plays and screenplays after earlier work as a poet, cartoonist and labour organiser.

O'Brien wrote or co-wrote screenplays for films including *Young at Heart* (1954), *Trapeze* (1956) and *The Devil at 4 O'Clock* (1961). His television writing credits include episodes of *Ironside* and *Police Story*. He also served as a producer on series such as *Police Story* and *Miami Vice* (1984).

His younger brother was the actor Edmond O'Brien. O'Brien received an Academy Award nomination for the story of *Here Comes the Groom* (1951) and shared an Emmy Award for *Police Story*.
