## Biography

Lionel Newman (4 January 1916 – 3 February 1989) was an American conductor, pianist and composer of film and television music. He joined 20th Century Fox in the early 1940s as a rehearsal pianist after working as an accompanist for Mae West and conducting for Earl Carroll’s Vanities. He remained at the studio for more than four decades, rising to music director and later general director of music, and contributed to over 200 films.

Newman received eleven Academy Award nominations and won the award for Best Score of a Musical Picture for *Hello, Dolly!* (1969), shared with Lennie Hayton. He conducted or supervised scores for films including *Alien* (1979), *The Omen* (1976), *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1953) and *An Affair to Remember* (1957). He was the brother of composers Alfred Newman and Emil Newman, and uncle to Randy Newman, David Newman, Thomas Newman and Maria Newman.
