Pape began his career in British stock companies before moving to the United States. He appeared in more than twenty Broadway productions between 1912 and 1935. His screen work began in the silent era with films such as *The Pursuing Shadow* (1915) and continued in Hollywood with supporting roles in over fifty sound films during the 1930s and early 1940s.

He is known for his performances in *The Philadelphia Story* (1940) as Edward, *How Green Was My Valley* (1941) as Evans, and *The Hound of the Baskervilles* (1939) as the Coroner. He worked with directors including John Ford, Ernst Lubitsch and George Cukor.
