Lisa Edelstein's usual place on screen is the office at the end of the corridor. She plays hospital administrators and lawyers, women whose job is to tell the interesting man no and to be right about it. As Dr Lisa Cuddy on *House* (2004–2011) she was Dean of Medicine, the person whose signature Hugh Laurie's doctor needed and whose authority he treated as a suggestion. On paper it is a thankless part. The show gave House the lines and Cuddy the reaction, and for seven seasons Edelstein made the reaction worth watching.

She is quick, which is the first thing. Cuddy's exchanges with House move at the speed of people who have had the same argument for years and still enjoy it, and our review of the series found that she and Omar Epps kept those exchanges lively even when the writing looked only at Laurie. Edelstein has said, crediting David Shore, that "characters don’t change, they get unveiled", which is a generous way of describing seven years of holding a position.

Before the hospital there was a long stretch of guest work, the kind that teaches an actor to make an impression in two scenes. She was George Costanza's girlfriend for two episodes of *Seinfeld* (1993), a sports reporter on *Sports Night* (1999), and a call girl across several episodes of *The West Wing* (1999). Before any of that she was Lisa E on the New York club scene of the 1980s, hosting for MTV and writing, composing and performing an AIDS-awareness musical at La MaMa. She was a writer before television found a use for her, which explains what came next.

*Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce* (2014–2018) gave her a lead at last, as Abby McCarthy, and she produced, wrote and directed episodes as well.
