## Fi1m on Liv Tyler

> Liv Tyler is persuasive when a director gives her quietness something to do. Her unforced presence suits Peter Jackson’s fantasy, though *Armageddon* shows how quickly it suffers when the writing insists on being touching.

In *Armageddon* (1998), Liv Tyler’s Grace Stamper is asked to supply tenderness alongside Ben Affleck’s A.J. Frost, and we can see the effort. We were unmoved because the writing makes the bid for our sympathy so obvious. Tyler is better when she can let a feeling register without pushing it towards us. We value that restraint, though she needs a director who knows what to do with it.

*Stealing Beauty* (1996), directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, brought her to notice for a natural, intuitive screen presence. The move into Michael Bay’s *Armageddon* gave her mainstream exposure, but also demonstrated how poorly that quality serves her when the writing becomes insistent. Robert Altman’s *Cookie’s Fortune* (1999) offered the more useful setting of an ensemble. Her effectiveness there is a reason to resist judging her solely by the larger productions, where being noticed and being well used are separate matters.

Peter Jackson found a more suitable place for her in *The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring* (2001). Arwen makes good use of the otherworldly presence for which Tyler is often noted. She prepared with sword fighting, horseback riding and Elvish, which should discourage the idea that she simply arrived looking right. We would not make her the principal reason to see a film so absorbing and frightening. It is, though, a far better fit than *Armageddon*.

*The Leftovers* (2014–2017), in which she plays Meg Abbott, marks a substantial television chapter after the trilogy. We take the criticism of limited vocal and dramatic variety in some roles seriously, without assuming a quiet performance is necessarily an inadequate one. *Armageddon* shows how visible her effort can become, but its laboured tenderness gives us little reason to think more forceful acting would solve the problem. Start with Jackson, then try her work with Altman; do not ask Bay’s romantic passages to settle the matter.
