## Biography

Lotte Lenya (also credited as Lotte Lenja) was an Austrian-American actress and singer. Born Karoline Wilhelmine Charlotte Blamauer in Vienna on 18 October 1898, she studied ballet and drama in Zurich from 1914 and worked in Berlin theatres in the 1920s.

She is best known for her performances in works by her first husband, composer Kurt Weill, including the role of Jenny in the original 1928 production of *Die Dreigroschenoper* (*The Threepenny Opera*). In English-language cinema she appeared in *The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone* (1961) and played Rosa Klebb in *From Russia with Love* (1963). She died in New York on 27 November 1981.
