## Biography

Louis Bromfield was an American novelist and screenwriter. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, he studied agriculture at Cornell University and journalism at Columbia University. He served in the American Field Service during the First World War.

Bromfield achieved success as a novelist in the 1920s with works including *The Green Bay Tree* (1924), *Possession* (1925) and *Early Autumn* (1926), the last of which won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1927. He later worked briefly in Hollywood as a contract screenwriter. His credits include a contribution to the screenplay for *Dracula* (1931).

In later life Bromfield returned to Ohio, where he established Malabar Farm and became known for his advocacy of sustainable agriculture. He died in 1956.
