We value the humanity he brought to stern or reassuring figures, even when the parts became repetitive. In *IF* (2024), the old bear Lewis looks after imaginary friends who have been forgotten, and Louis Gossett Jr. gives him a voice that sounds tired of having to manage. We can hear the weariness without losing the sense that he will carry on caring for them. The fantasy around him cannot decide what its invented world is for. Gossett makes the creature feel more believable than much of what surrounds him. We rate him most highly for this ability to make a dependable figure seem like someone who has had to work at it. *Roots* (1977) gives that quality more to do. His Fiddler is an older enslaved man guiding Kunta Kinte, a role that could have been reduced to useful advice. We were moved by Gossett's Fiddler because he remained a recognisable person within a story whose suffering could so easily overwhelm its characters. Alongside LeVar Burton and Cicely Tyson, he gives us reasons to keep watching beyond agreement with what the programme says about slavery. The storytelling sometimes presses too hard; these actors need less insistence. The national recognition brought by *Roots* was followed by Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in *An Officer and a Gentleman* (1982). Gossett brought subtlety and humanity to the drill instructor's sternness, though the subsequent run of military men and tough mentors narrowed what he was asked to do. We should not mistake the repetition of those parts for a failure of the actor's imagination. *Enemy Mine* (1985), with Gossett playing the alien Jeriba Shigan beneath heavy make-up, offers a different sort of physical task. Lewis is an apt later use of that authority, though John Krasinski's *IF* remains too muddled to recommend. Janusz Kamiński's warm, late-afternoon light helps the creatures belong beside the humans, while Jess Gonchor's changing rooms give the forgotten friends a home with some imagination. Gossett supplies a tiredness that the writing does not, and the film benefits from letting us hear it. Its sincerity does not make up for the missing jokes. Start with *Roots*, accepting some heavy-handed storytelling for an ensemble that makes the suffering personal. ## Biography Louis Gossett Jr. was an American actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he began his career on Broadway in 1953 with a role in *Take a Giant Step* and later appeared in the original stage production of *A Raisin in the Sun*. He is known for his performances as Fiddler in the 1977 television miniseries *Roots*, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award, and as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 film *An Officer and a Gentleman*, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the first Black actor to win in that category. He also voiced Lewis in the 2024 film *IF*. Gossett appeared in numerous other films and television series over more than five decades, including *Enemy Mine* (1985) and *Watchmen* (2019). He received additional Golden Globe Awards and other honours during his career. *Sources: imdb.com, people.com, britannica.com, behindthevoiceactors.com.* ## On Fi1m (6) - *IF* (2024), Fi1m 56, as Lewis (voice) — [page](https://film.one/film/if.md) - *The Color Purple* (2023), Fi1m 73, as Ol' Mister — [page](https://film.one/film/the-color-purple-2023.md) - *Family Guy* (1999), Fi1m 63, as Drill Sargent (voice) — [page](https://film.one/tv/family-guy.md) - *Jaws 3-D* (1983), Fi1m 36, as Calvin Bouchard — [page](https://film.one/film/jaws-3-d.md) - *An Officer and a Gentleman* (1982), Fi1m 70, as Sergeant Emil Foley — [page](https://film.one/film/an-officer-and-a-gentleman.md) - *Roots* (1977), Fi1m 83, as Fiddler — [page](https://film.one/tv/roots.md) ## Complete filmography (182) Every credit, newest first.
