## Biography

Louis Gruenberg was a Russian-born American composer and pianist. Born near Brest-Litovsk on 3 August 1884, he moved with his family to the United States as an infant. He studied piano and composition in Berlin and Vienna, and performed as a pianist in Europe and the United States before devoting himself primarily to composition.

Gruenberg composed operas, orchestral works and chamber music. His opera *The Emperor Jones* (1933) was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera. In the 1940s he worked in Hollywood, writing scores for films including *So Ends Our Night* (1941), *Commandos Strike at Dawn* (1942), *Arch of Triumph* (1948) and *All the King's Men* (1949). He received Academy Award nominations for his film music and a Golden Globe nomination for *All the King's Men*.

He died in Los Angeles on 9 June 1964.
