Born Louis Charles Hayward in Johannesburg on 19 March 1909, he was educated in France and England, including at Latymer Upper School in London. He became a protégé of Noël Coward and appeared in London stage productions before making his first British films in the early 1930s. Hayward moved to Hollywood in the mid-1930s. He gained attention with his role as Denis Moore in *Anthony Adverse* (1936) and went on to star in films including *The Man in the Iron Mask* (1939), *Dance, Girl, Dance* (1940), *And Then There Were None* (1945) and *House by the River* (1950). During the Second World War he served in the United States Marine Corps, commanding a photographic unit at the Battle of Tarawa and receiving the Bronze Star Medal.
