## Fi1m on Louis Hofmann

> Louis Hofmann's trick is to do less than anyone else in the frame and make you watch him for it. In *Dark* the stillness held for three seasons; the question now is whether he will be allowed to do anything else.

Watch what Louis Hofmann does when another actor is shouting. He waits. In *Dark* (2017), as Jonas Kahnwald, a boy back at school after a breakdown that followed his father's suicide, he spends most of the first season saying almost nothing while Winden comes apart around him, and the silence is the performance. Adults panic, parents shout, a priest with a tattoo the length of his back enjoys himself, and Jonas stands there. In the first season that stillness reads as shock. Later it reads as something harder, and we found it unnerving, because nothing in his face had changed and everything behind it had.

He arrived at this without a drama school. Hofmann began on German television as a child, from 2006, and had his first lead in *Tom Sawyer* (2011). The parts that got him noticed came in 2015: Wolfgang Rosenkötter in *Sanctuary*, a boy in an abusive institution, and Sebastian Schumann in *Land of Mine*. *Centre of My World* (2016), with Hofmann as Phil, gave him a coming-of-age lead in contemporary German cinema. Then Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar cast him in *Dark*, which ran three seasons to 2020 and took him to an audience well beyond Germany. Since then the work has been mostly in English: Werner Pfennig in *All the Light We Cannot See* (2023), then *Masters of the Air* (2024) and *Ripley* (2024).

Put those parts side by side and a type appears: the sensitive young man, usually in a war or somewhere near one, carrying something he cannot say. He is good at it. He is also aware of it; in 2023 he told GQ Germany that his characters would probably keep a certain sensitivity from him, but that he was looking forward to a time when he was not only the suffering young man. We share the hope. The stillness that anchors *Dark* is a real gift, and Friese and bo Odar had the sense to build a series around it rather than fight it, but a gift used every time stops looking like a choice. We have not yet seen him be cruel, or funny, or wrong, and we would like to.

For now, start where the reputation started. Watch *Dark* in German with the subtitles, not the dub, because a dubbed Hofmann loses the one thing he is doing. Take it a season at a time. And if he ever turns up in something where he talks too much and behaves badly, we will be first in the queue.
