## Fi1m on Louis Hynes

> Hynes has one lead to his name, Klaus Baudelaire, and he played him with a politeness so steady that over 25 episodes it stopped reading as character. The habit is good; what comes next will show whether there is more under it.

Klaus Baudelaire pushes up his glasses before he quotes something, and Louis Hynes does it so reliably across *A Series of Unfortunate Events* (2017) that it becomes the performance's punctuation. It is a neat piece of business, exact and unshowy, and in the first house it tells us everything we need about a boy who would rather be reading. The trouble is that the series keeps moving the boy to a new house and asking him to be right again. Somewhere around the fourth episode we noticed we were waiting for the glasses rather than the line, and we were cross about it, because the sets and Patrick Warburton's narration deserved a story that let the children change.

Hynes came to the screen late and from the stage: Franzl in a 2015 Garsington Opera production of Strauss's *Intermezzo*, then a 2016 television debut as Young Alaric in *Barbarians Rising*. He was cast as Klaus after an open process that ended in a chemistry read, and spent three seasons and 25 episodes in Vancouver, in an American accent, with dense and wordy dialogue and a school timetable to fit around it. After that came a recurring part as Vlad in the first season of *The Great* (2020), which put him in an adult ensemble and a sharper kind of period satire. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it here. Two features are on the way: *Madfabulous* (2026), a queer period drama set in 1890s Wales, with Hynes as Neville, and *The Night House*, in which he plays Viktor.

What he does well is plain enough. He has said he wanted Klaus to be very similar to the book, and he is: direct, bookish, polite, the only reasonable person in any room. The problem is that a boy who is right in every room has nowhere to go, and Barry Sonnenfeld's series, for all its handsome construction, gave him a new guardian, a new disguise and the same ending each time. Malina Weissman has the identical difficulty as Violet, tying her hair back to invent while Hynes pushes his glasses up to quote, and the baby playing Sunny comes off as the most natural of the three. Hynes has talked of Klaus growing more confident and dynamic as the story goes on. We saw the calm more than the growth, and we think that is the structure's fault more than his.

So far he has been cast as the clever one in the waistcoat, and the next two films keep him in period. He has yet to play someone who is wrong, or foolish, or unkind, and that is the part we would most like to see him attempt.
