## Biography

Louis Levy (20 November 1894 – 18 August 1957) was an English film composer, music director and conductor. Born in London, he began working in the film industry in 1910 arranging and performing music for silent films. He became musical director at several London cinemas before joining Gaumont British studios, where he headed the music department for Gainsborough Pictures productions from 1933.

Levy worked extensively on Alfred Hitchcock films, serving as musical director or composer on *The Man Who Knew Too Much* (1934), *The 39 Steps* (1935), *Sabotage* (1937), *Young and Innocent* (1937) and *The Lady Vanishes* (1938). He also contributed to Will Hay comedies and later films including *Under Capricorn* (1949), *Stage Fright* (1950) and *The Dam Busters* (1955). From 1936 he presented the BBC radio series *Music From the Movies*, which ran until the 1950s. In 1948 he became general musical director for the Associated British Picture Corporation and later headed music at Elstree Studios.
