We value her care with actors, but her sympathy for a central character can leave the people around them too simply drawn. Sophie Nélisse makes courage look difficult in *Irena's Vow* (2024), and Louise Archambault gives her the space to do it. The director keeps her attention on Irena Gut Opdyke rather than attempting a comprehensive account of Nazism. We were moved by Nélisse because her performance makes bravery seem demanding, never automatic. This is Archambault's strength as a director, though the film also exposes a weakness: she gives us ample reason to respect Irena without making the people around her equally convincing. *Familia* (2005), her first feature, examined family life through a mother-daughter story; *Gabrielle* (2013) turned to independence and romance. For the latter, she worked with a mixed professional and non-professional cast, including actors with developmental disabilities. *And the Birds Rained Down* (2019) adapted Jocelyne Saucier's novel about elderly recluses. Across these subjects, her interest in people who do not conform to social expectations is clear. The recurring concern is how much say they get in the way they live. *Irena's Vow*, her first English-language feature, carries that concern into a wartime drama. Archambault's decision to concentrate on one woman is sensible, and her restraint leaves Nélisse room to work without making suffering unbearable to watch. Dan Gordon's writing makes the moral stakes easy to follow, but it also fixes the supporting characters too firmly in their functions. Once we understand their place in Irena's story, there is too little more to learn about them. The film needs to question those first impressions more closely than it does. We would like to see Archambault give the people around her leads more chance to surprise us. That need not mean louder direction or a harsher treatment of suffering; the patience she gives an actor is worth preserving. It means allowing a supporting character to become more complicated after we have understood what they contribute to the plot.
