## Biography

Loyal Griggs (also credited as Loyal Allen Griggs) was an American cinematographer. He joined the staff of Paramount Pictures in 1924 after leaving school and worked initially in the studio's process department. He progressed through roles as assistant photographer, second unit photographer and camera process photographer before becoming a director of photography in 1951.

Griggs won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for the 1953 Western *Shane*. His other credits as director of photography include the 1954 musical *White Christmas*, the 1956 epic *The Ten Commandments*, *The Greatest Story Ever Told* (1965) and *In Harm's Way* (1965). He received an Academy Honorary Award as part of the team for *Spawn of the North* (1938). His final film was the 1971 comedy *Bunny O'Hare*.
