## Biography

Luis Alcoriza was a Spanish-born Mexican screenwriter, film director and actor. Born in Badajoz, Spain, on 5 September 1918, he left Spain during the Civil War and settled in Mexico from 1940, later becoming a naturalised Mexican citizen. He died in Cuernavaca, Morelos, on 3 December 1992.

Alcoriza collaborated frequently with Luis Buñuel on screenplays, including *The Young and the Damned* (1950), *Él* (1953), *Death in the Garden* (1956) and *The Exterminating Angel* (1962). He also wrote for other directors and directed his own films, among them *Tlayucan* (1962), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. He was married to Janet Alcoriza.
