## Fi1m on Luis Guzmán

> Luis Guzmán is funny when his characters have sensible objections to the people around them. We particularly value the humour and practical warmth he brings to Steven Soderbergh's crime films.

In *The Limey* (1999), Luis Guzmán's Eduardo keeps asking Terence Stamp's Wilson to repeat his rhyming slang in English. He is a reluctant driver with a reasonable objection, and Guzmán lets the inconvenience be funny without making Eduardo seem foolish. That practical response gives us someone to recognise beside Stamp's vengeful father. We laughed at the early warehouse scene, then felt uneasy: Wilson goes back inside after a beating, and Steven Soderbergh leaves us outside listening to gunshots.

His earlier casting as thugs and policemen could have confined him to supplying trouble whenever a crime film needed it. Brian De Palma's *Carlito's Way* (1993), with Guzmán as Pachanga, preceded the late-1990s work that made him more prominent. Paul Thomas Anderson cast him as club owner Maurice in *Boogie Nights* (1997), whose crowded scenes remain among its pleasures. Soderbergh followed with *Out of Sight* (1998), then *The Limey* and *Traffic* (2000), giving us the most persuasive run of films for understanding his value.

*Traffic* makes particularly good use of his company. As Ray Castro, he sits in a car with Don Cheadle outside Helena's house, and the two seem to have spent enough hours together to know when a joke is needed. Their affection and their sense that the job is largely pointless give the San Diego strand a warmth the Washington speeches lack. Guzmán can suggest loyalty without asking for a scene devoted to proving it. We would return to those two in the car before sitting through another explanation of the drug trade.

The later work has included television, with Gomez Addams in *Wednesday* (2022), and voice acting as Wart in the 2026 Mario film. That animation is a poor setting for comic timing: it scarcely holds a shot long enough for a joke to land. Wart becomes another character to notice among the references. We would not mistake the casting for a reason to sit through it.

The danger remains that a film will cast him as a familiar criminal and consider the character written. Soderbergh gives him conversations, shared work and other people's odd habits to deal with, which are better uses of his particular humour. Start with *The Limey* for the exasperation, then *Traffic* for the company.

## Biography

Luis Guzmán is a Puerto Rican actor. He was born on 28 August 1956 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, and raised in New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York and began his career as a social worker before moving into acting through street theatre and independent films.

Guzmán has appeared in numerous films, including *Out of Sight* (1998) as José 'Chino' Chirino, *The Limey* (1999) as Eduardo Roel, and *Traffic* (2000) as Ray Castro. He has collaborated frequently with directors Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson. His other credits include *Boogie Nights* (1997), *Magnolia* (1999) and *Punch-Drunk Love* (2002). On television he has played roles in *Oz* and *Wednesday* (2022–). He voiced Wart in *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie* (2026).

He received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for *Traffic*.
