## Biography

Luis van Rooten was a Mexican-born American actor, architect and author. Born in Mexico City on 29 November 1906, he earned a BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927 and worked as an architect in Cleveland, Ohio, before moving into acting.

He began on stage at the Cleveland Playhouse and became a prolific character actor in radio, film and television, often specialising in dialects and villainous parts. His film credits include *The Big Clock* (1948), *Champion* (1949), *Detective Story* (1951) and *The Sea Chase* (1955); he voiced both the King and the Grand Duke in Walt Disney's *Cinderella* (1950). He also appeared in Broadway productions and numerous television series such as *Perry Mason* and *Gunsmoke*.

Van Rooten died on 17 June 1973 in Chatham, Massachusetts.
