The parts have been narrower than the actor, and the best of him is the small human scene. In *The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies* (2014), Smaug burns Lake-town from the air, and Bard climbs a bell tower with a bow and his son. For ten minutes a film otherwise made of computer-generated masonry has one man, one dragon and a clear job. That is Luke Evans's trade. He is a tall, straight-backed man who can be handed a ridiculous task in a ridiculous place and make it look like work, and he does it without a wink. He came to films late and from the stage. There were eight years of West End musicals, *Taboo*, *Rent*, *Miss Saigon* and *Piaf* among them, before a film debut as Apollo in *Clash of the Titans* (2010). Neither *Hobbit* film is one we would send you to, so this is not a claim that Bard rescues them. It is a claim that he is the human-sized thing in them, and that it counts. Gaston in *Beauty and the Beast* (2017) is the part most people know, and it uses what the stage gave him: a voice built for a big house and a body that can carry a costume. It was widely praised, and it is not hard to see what the film wanted from him. The doubt is about the shape of the parts, not the playing. A god, an archer, a warlord, a vampire, a villain in a car: they are all men who stand up straight and mean it, and the industry has been content to keep casting the one thing. A long television run as John Schuyler Moore in *The Alienist* (2018 to 2020) is the entry on the list that most suggests he has more to give than the franchises have asked for. He is back on stage, on Broadway in 2026, which is where the voice came from in the first place.
