## Fi1m on Luke Mably

> Luke Mably plays men who assume the room is theirs, and he is at his best when the film lets us watch that assumption curdle. *Exam* gives him the fullest part we have reviewed; the rest has mostly been steady work in uniform.

Eight candidates, one room, a sheet of paper each and a clock. Before anyone has agreed what the test is, Luke Mably's White has named them all by what he can see: Black, Brown, Blonde, Brunette, Dark, and Deaf for the silent man in the corner nobody thinks to ask. It is a small act of ownership, and Stuart Hazeldine's *Exam* (2009) runs on it. Mably plays White as a salesman who has decided cruelty is confidence with the volume turned up, and his is the one performance in the film with enough shape to hold the camera for the full length. Chukwudi Iwuji's Black, steady and decent, gives him something to push against, and their argument over whether the group should cooperate is the best stretch the film has.

The career around that room has been less showy. Mably started in television in 1999, with a long run as Scott Lucas in *Dream Team* (1999–2002), and was one of the soldiers in Danny Boyle's *28 Days Later* (2002), as Private Clifton. Our review of that film did not single him out, which is fair: he is part of the furniture of a very good third act. *The Prince & Me* (2004), for Martha Coolidge and opposite Julia Stiles, put him in a lead and a romantic comedy, about as far from Hazeldine's room as the work gets, and a sequel followed in 2006. Then came the lead in *The Gates* (2010), an alcoholic neurosurgeon in *Combat Hospital* (2011), and a long stretch of British and American television, *SEAL Team* and *Silent Witness* among them, up to *MobLand* (2025).

The pattern is soldiers, doctors, men with authority or men who want it, usually under pressure and usually in a confined space. He is good at the pressure. In *Exam* we disliked White inside a minute and still found him the only person in that room we wanted to keep watching, because Mably sets the confidence a notch too high and never once winks at us to say he knows it. The catch is that a performance cannot rescue a script, and *Exam* thins badly after its first half hour; we scored it 57, and he is the main reason it was not lower.

In 2004 he said he wanted to play as many different characters and kinds of film as he could, and added: "I'm very aware, especially after something like 'The Prince and Me,' that I can be typecast and put into a box." Twenty years on, the box turned out to be a uniform rather than a crown. He wears it well. We would still like to see him given another room with the door locked.
