## Biography

Luther Adler was an American actor and theatre director. Born Lutha Adler on 4 May 1903 in New York City, he was one of six children of Russian-Jewish actors Sara and Jacob P. Adler. His father was a founder of the Yiddish theatre in America; his sister Stella Adler was an actress and drama teacher, and his brother Jay Adler was also an actor.

Adler made his stage debut as a child in Yiddish theatre and appeared on Broadway from 1921. He was a founding member of the Group Theatre in 1931 and directed plays on Broadway. He began working in film in 1937 and took supporting roles in productions including *D.O.A.* (1949), *House of Strangers* (1949), *The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel* (1951) and *Absence of Malice* (1981), in which he played Santos Malderone. He also appeared regularly on television.

Adler died on 8 December 1984 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
