Macha Méril is a French actress born on 3 September 1940 in Rabat, then in the French Protectorate in Morocco. Of Russian princely descent on her father's side, she studied literature at the Sorbonne before training at the Cours Dullin of the Théâtre National Populaire.

She made her screen debut in *La Main chaude* (1960) and rose to prominence with the lead in Jean-Luc Godard's *Une femme mariée* (1964). Subsequent roles include parts in Luis Buñuel's *Belle de Jour* (1967), Dario Argento's *Deep Red* (1975) and Agnès Varda's *Vagabond* (1985), in which she played Madame Landier. Méril has also worked as a producer and writer.
