## Fi1m on Mads Mikkelsen

> Mads Mikkelsen makes a threat more unsettling by taking his time over it. We rate the restraint, and the sympathy it can uncover, but too many franchise parts ask him to stand still while the film wastes him.

In *Mufasa: The Lion King* (2024), Mads Mikkelsen’s Kiros delivers his threats patiently, as though there is no question of anyone refusing him. He makes this leader of white lions sound as if he is thinking before he speaks. We enjoyed listening to him more than we expected to, because that unhurried delivery gives the threats conviction. Barry Jenkins’s film has forgettable songs and a framing device that keeps interrupting, but Mikkelsen gives it a villain worth attending to. His restraint works even without a human face to study.

The international villain roles can obscure how much of his work remains in Danish leading parts. After his breakthrough in Nicolas Winding Refn’s *Pusher* (1996), *Casino Royale* (2006) brought him international recognition as Le Chiffre. There he gives an unsympathetic character enough humanity to make the menace more interesting. Martin Campbell gives him a film that rewards the attention, with purposeful action and Daniel Craig bringing emotional weight to Bond. That is where we would start, with a warning that the final stretch goes on too long.

He kept taking Danish leading roles in *The Hunt* (2012) and *Another Round* (2020), the latter directed by Thomas Vinterberg. These emotionally contained performances make it harder to mistake restraint for a permanent wish to look menacing. His recurring work with Vinterberg and writer-director Anders Thomas Jensen is a useful corrective to the impression left by the blockbusters. We value the actor who can make an unsympathetic person understandable, and would rather see that ability tested than another familiar scowl.

James Mangold’s *Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny* (2023) shows the limit of that approach. As Dr. Voller, Mikkelsen is frightening for a couple of scenes, after which the plot mostly requires him to turn up late and glower. His stillness becomes repetitive when the writing gives him nothing new to express. We would happily watch him play another villain, provided the part gives him something to do after the entrance.

## Biography

Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen is a Danish actor. Born in Østerbro, Copenhagen, he trained as a dancer before studying acting at the Århus Theatre School and making his film debut in 1996.

He first gained prominence in Denmark for roles in the Pusher trilogy (1996, 2004), the series Rejseholdet (2000–2004), and films including Open Hearts (2002), The Green Butchers (2003), Adam's Apples (2005) and After the Wedding (2006). His international breakthrough came as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale (2006).

Mikkelsen has since appeared in Hollywood films such as King Arthur (2004), Clash of the Titans (2010), Doctor Strange (2016), Rogue One (2016), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) and Mufasa: The Lion King (2024). He is also known for the title role in the series Hannibal (2013–2015) and won the Cannes Best Actor award for The Hunt (2012). He is married to choreographer Hanne Jacobsen.
