## Fi1m on Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell

> Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell makes the children matter in *Once Were Warriors*, giving Grace Heke a vulnerability that holds our attention beside the forceful leads. Her brief screen career deserves attention for this substantial debut.

In *Once Were Warriors* (1994), Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell's expressive face gives Grace Heke both a child's vulnerability and a sense of what she has already had to bear. She holds our attention without competing with the adults' force. That matters in a drama where the parents' troubles could easily become the only story. Her performance is an important reason to see this painful, sometimes over-insistent film. This was her screen debut, made without previous acting experience.

Director Lee Tamahori has Temuera Morrison's Jake Heke to supply the frightening physical presence, while Rena Owen prevents him from dominating everything. Kerr-Bell works alongside Julian Arahanga as Nig and Taungaroa Emile as Boogie to keep the children in our thoughts. They make the consequences of the adults' behaviour harder to put aside. We were distressed by Grace's vulnerability because Kerr-Bell makes the family's troubles feel like something a child has to live with.

The later work moved chiefly to television, with *Shortland Street* (1997), the TV play *Staunch* (2000) and *Mataku* (2002). In *Staunch* she played the lead, Ariana, a useful reminder that Grace was not her only substantial part. But the appearances were occasional, and the acting career ended around 2002. Her debut remains the clearest basis for our judgement, rather than a handful of credits from which to guess what else she might have done.

The reservation is about how hard *Once Were Warriors* presses its suffering. It sometimes piles on misery after the damage is clear, and Kerr-Bell's affecting work does not make every such choice necessary. Nor should praising her mean overlooking Owen, who does so much to keep the drama from becoming Jake's alone. We recommend it for these family performances, with a firm warning about domestic violence. Choose an evening when there is no need for the film to be comforting.

## Biography

She later appeared in the television series *Shortland Street* (1997), *Duggan* (1999), the television film *Staunch* (2000) — for which she received another award — and an episode of *Mataku* (2002).
