## Fi1m on Mandy Moore

> Mandy Moore's Rapunzel is cheerful with a bruise underneath, and that undertone, sadness sitting quietly beneath the bounce, is the most interesting thing she does. Film has used it too seldom; television, in *This Is Us*, used it for six years.

Rapunzel gets out of the tower and cannot decide how she feels about it. She rolls in the grass and announces she is free, then announces she is a terrible daughter, and the two moods trade places every fifteen seconds or so. Mandy Moore plays it as bounce with a bruise underneath, and the sequence is the funniest and truest thing in *Tangled* (2010). Zachary Levi's Flynn gets the jokes; she gets the person.

Moore came to acting from pop, with the single 'Candy' in 1999, and the early film work carried that with it. A supporting part in *The Princess Diaries* (2001) and the lead in *A Walk to Remember* (2002) got her taken seriously as an actor, though the second was also the kind of role critics of the time filed under typecasting. She sings as well as she speaks, and *Tangled* wanted both.

The larger turn came on television. Rebecca Pearson in *This Is Us* (2016–2022) asked her to hold a family drama together across six seasons and several generations, and to age on screen under makeup as she did it. We have not reviewed the series, so we will say only what is widely observed: that it is the work most people now think of first, that she made it with Dan Fogelman, who has cast her twice, and that it replaced the pop singer in the public mind with an actor playing a mother. Moore has said of it that 'It kind of changed everything', and we see no reason to argue.

What we can vouch for first hand is the tower. We went into *Tangled* braced for the smart-alec trailer and came out having been caught, briefly, by a cartoon girl's guilt, which is not something we expected to write down. Moore does not push the sadness; it sits under the cheerfulness and surfaces when the film goes quiet. That is harder than it looks in a voice booth, where an actor has no face to help her.

The record on film is thin, and we would like it thicker. She has a comedy coming, *The Breadwinner* (2026), as Katie Wilcox, and we will watch it with some curiosity, because she can plainly do more than the parts have usually asked.
