## Fi1m on Mandy Patinkin

> Mandy Patinkin makes a comic swordsman’s feelings worth taking seriously. We value his willingness to commit so fully, and *The Princess Bride* shows how much warmth that intensity can bring when there is room for humour.

Mandy Patinkin takes the swordplay in *The Princess Bride* (1987) seriously enough to make us care about the man holding the sword. His Inigo Montoya can be funny without treating his own feelings as a joke. The swordplay gives him something precise to concentrate on, and that concentration is part of the pleasure: he makes the encounter matter without behaving as though he has wandered into a more solemn film. We laughed at his earnestness, then found ourselves anxious for him because Patinkin never lets the comedy make those feelings seem trivial. It is the performance we would start with: physically expressive, deeply committed and well suited to a film that needs its danger to survive its silliness.

The musical theatre work matters here, especially Georges Seurat in Stephen Sondheim’s *Sunday in the Park with George* (1984). That background helps explain the forceful voice and the willingness to give an emotion its full weight. The early screen work includes Avigdor opposite Barbra Streisand in *Yentl* (1983); the later television years include Saul Berenson in *Homeland* (2011–2020). These are different demands on an actor whose most recognisable quality is how much he commits.

Rob Reiner gives that commitment a useful setting in *The Princess Bride*. Cary Elwes’s Westley has the lighter touch, and their exchanges leave space for pleasure without making the danger harmless. Patinkin does not have to make Inigo less sincere to keep up. We find him more involving than the central romance, partly because Goldman’s script gives Inigo richer opportunities than it gives the lovers. It is a good example of a supporting part making us care when the main story has not quite managed it.

The recurring complaint is that he can overdo it, and there are limits to how much emphatic acting a scene can take. Yet the restraint in Inigo matters as much as the physical expression, and Patinkin knows when a line needs less. The dialogue is memorable because he gives it a person’s conviction, without asking us to applaud each phrase. Start with *The Princess Bride*, though the lovers may leave you wishing Reiner would return to their companions.
