## Biography

Marc Connelly was an American playwright, screenwriter and director. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he began his career as a journalist in Pittsburgh before moving to New York, where he joined the Algonquin Round Table and collaborated with George S. Kaufman on several Broadway comedies, including *Dulcy* (1921), *Merton of the Movies* (1922) and *Beggar on Horseback* (1924).

His solo play *The Green Pastures* (1930) won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Connelly also worked in Hollywood, contributing screenplays to *Captains Courageous* (1937), *I Married a Witch* (1942) and *Cabin in the Sky* (1943). He taught playwriting at Yale University from 1946 to 1950 and published the memoir *Voices Offstage* in 1968. He died in New York City.
