## Biography

Marcel Achard was a French playwright and screenwriter. Born Marcel-Auguste Ferréol on 5 July 1899 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, he wrote numerous plays and screenplays over five decades.

He is credited with the screenplay for *The Earrings of Madame de...* (1953), directed by Max Ophüls. Other screenwriting credits include *Mayerling* (1936). His plays, such as *Jean de la Lune* (1929), were popular sentimental comedies.

Achard was elected to the Académie française in 1959. He presided over the Cannes Film Festival in 1958 and 1959. He died on 4 September 1974 in Paris.
