## Biography

Marcel Vertès (born Marcell Vértes, also credited as Vertes) was a Hungarian-born French costume designer, production designer and illustrator. Born in Budapest in 1895, he worked in film from the early 1930s until the early 1950s.

He is best known for his work on *Moulin Rouge* (1952), for which he received Academy Awards for best art direction (colour) and best costume design (colour), shared with Paul Sheriff. He also designed costumes for *The Thief of Bagdad* (1940) and *Tonight and Every Night* (1945).

Vertès collaborated with Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s and created murals for hotels in New York. He died in Paris in 1961.
