Born in Hackney, London, she began her career in repertory theatre and was artistic director of the Repertory Theatre in Bangor, County Down, in the 1960s. She played Sarah Stevens in the 1966 television cycle *Talking to a Stranger*.

Her film roles include the Teacher's Wife in *Pink Floyd: The Wall* (1982), The Ancient Booer in *The Princess Bride* (1987), a park bench woman in *101 Dalmatians* (1996), an old lady in *Love Actually* (2003), and the food trolley lady in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* (2005).
