## Biography

Marguerite Roberts was an American screenwriter. She began her career in Hollywood in the early 1930s after working as a secretary and script reader, and went on to write screenplays for major studios including MGM and Paramount.

In 1951 she and her husband, the writer John Sanford, refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. She was blacklisted for nine years, during which her credit on *Ivanhoe* (1952) was removed. She returned to work in 1962 and later wrote the screenplays for *5 Card Stud* (1968), *True Grit* (1969) and *Shoot Out* (1971).

Roberts died in 1989.
