## Fi1m on Marianne Jean-Baptiste

> Marianne Jean-Baptiste can make listening as absorbing as an outburst. We value the care she takes over both: with Mike Leigh, she gives women room to be funny, demanding and unhappy without explaining away their behaviour.

In *Secrets & Lies* (1996), Marianne Jean-Baptiste keeps us watching the person who is listening. Her Hortense Cumberbatch, an adopted optometrist looking for her birth mother, has a steadiness that matters beside Brenda Blethyn. She keeps Hortense's needs present even when somebody else is speaking, so the quieter performance never feels like a lesser part. Leigh's writing sometimes spells out feelings we have already understood, but Jean-Baptiste has usually got there ahead of it.

That breakthrough did not lead to a steady succession of leading parts in British films. With opportunities limited, she took her work to American television, playing FBI agent Vivian Johnson in *Without a Trace* (2002–2009). Its seven-season run belongs in any account of her work, rather than being treated as a long wait for another film with Leigh. There was also a lead in the British horror-comedy *In Fabric* (2018), as Sheila Woolchapel.

*Hard Truths* (2024) puts her back with Leigh as Pansy, who attacks everyone she meets and gives each complaint its own reasoning. A baby's pockets require an explanation; a grinning dog is an offence. We laughed at the pockets, then felt uncomfortable because Jean-Baptiste makes the complaint sound considered rather than merely ridiculous. She plays Pansy loudly from the outset, yet the performance grows unbearably sad without making the hostility easier to live with. The humour depends on allowing that she has noticed something, even when her response is more than anyone should have to endure.

Leigh's extended improvisation and character-building process suits an actor who can give such particular weight to a grievance. With Hortense, the same care goes into listening without disappearing beside a more demonstrative performer. The men in *Hard Truths* are thinly drawn in places, and even Jean-Baptiste cannot make the film around Pansy as persuasive as Pansy herself. Start with *Secrets & Lies*, then leave room for *Hard Truths* on an evening when a woman arguing with everything will not be too much company.

## Biography

Marianne Jean-Baptiste is an English actress. Born in London in 1967 to parents of Antiguan and St Lucian heritage, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

She gained international recognition for her role as Hortense Cumberbatch in Mike Leigh’s *Secrets & Lies* (1996), which earned her Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. She later played Vivian Johnson in the US series *Without a Trace* (2002–2009).

Jean-Baptiste reunited with Leigh for the lead role of Pansy in *Hard Truths* (2024), receiving a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
